What is acid sulphate soil?

Acid sulphate soils contain iron sulphides. Left undisturbed below the water table they are harmless, but once exposed to air through drainage or excavation they produce sulphuric acid, often carrying toxic quantities of iron, aluminium and heavy metals. The resulting acidification damages aquatic ecosystems, agricultural land and construction works — which is why acid sulphate soil management plans are a standard requirement on low-lying coastal projects in Queensland and New South Wales.

How we treat it

Agricultural lime, made from finely crushed limestone, neutralises acid sulphate soil by raising calcium and magnesium levels, restoring soil productivity and removing the hazard to plants, people and structures.

Our crews work directly to your Acid Sulphate Soil Management Plan: we supply and deliver the specified product, apply it at the correct rate and depth with bulk bin spreaders, and incorporate it with heavy-duty 4WD tractors, ploughs and discs. Where required we also handle drying, soil amelioration, and follow-up grass seeding and fertilising, so the site is handed back finished.
